Notes on course grades

Course grades were determined by the following distribution:

A: 85% and higher

B: 75% - 84.9%

C: 60% - 74.9%

D: 50% - 59.9%

F: below 50%

Class average: 75.7%

Notes:

Five points were "free". The syllabus called for 20 percentage points allocated to homework assignments. Homework scores summed to 15 total points. So 5 more were added to everyone's homework point tally.

The C range is rather generous.

The average scores and the grade distribution were determined before extra credit was factored in; this was done to keep from artificially inflating the mean score. Your grade was initially determined before the extra credit. Then the extra credit was added to your score. Then your grade was bumped up if you moved into the higher grade bracket. For 14 people in the class, the extra credit improved their grade.
