Econ 122-008 (2-3:15) test results

To those in my TTh afternoon nicroeconomics class:

I neglected to clarify the results after scoring the written problem.

The average score was 31.78 and the median was 32.

Since a 32 out of 40 is an 80%, there is no curve. So you should interpret your grade as follows:

A: 36+
B: 32 - 35.75
C: 28 - 31.75
D: 24 - 27.75
F: below 24.

If you did not do as well as expected, I would ask you first to reflect upon your study efforts. Did you spend time with the material trying to master it? Did you work through and study all of the problems we did in class, on assignments, on the practice test, and in the text? If you know you could have and should have spent more time studying, then you know what to do for the next test (this forthcoming Thursday, March 4).

If you believe you have studied very hard and still did not get a good grade, you should stop by during office hours so that we can discuss your study strategies.

Also, keep in mind there is an optional study guide available with the text. If you are having trouble solving problems the only way to master it is doing more problems.

Otherwise, it is nice when I do not have to curve a test. Well done folks.

Office Hours for Wednesday, Feb. 17

Due to a meeting scheduled Wednesday afternoon I am adjusting my office hours for Wednesday, February 17, 2010.

Office hours will be 11:15 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. and 3:30-4:00 p.m.

I apologize for any inconvenience.

When you try to cut some slack...

Ok, you all should have gotten the emails about my being considerate for the weather for Tuesday's test.

I'm still getting emails where I think the excuses are a bit flimsy. For those who "went away for the weekend" I think I could have expected your return to campus on Monday. Your delay until Tuesday and then taking me up on the "bad weather" excuse fails to gain my sympathy. Also knowing what your weather situation now is, before the dawn and a chance to see what happens weather wise is just prematurely drawing conclusions. Moreover, it becomes an issue as to why you were not back on campus on a Monday.

When you wonder if I'll buy an excuse, try this exercise: put yourself in my shoes and think: should I buy your story.

This is a personal note, not a policy note. I'm dishing this out as food for thought.

Answer key to sample problems for test 1

This pertains to both section -006 and -008

I think this is the key to the multiple choice problems that are out on the I-drive. Let me know if you think there need to be clarifications or corrections.

(For a real test I'm ten times more careful to get the right answer, plus I get some "item analysis" about a question and I can tell, statistically if it was difficult, confusing, or coded incorrectly." Regardless, I always aim to get it all right--eventually. ;-)

I hope you're enjoying your snow day.

I'm trying to get the homework documents scanned and placed on the i-drive. Because the university is closed I may have to be creative. Please be patient.
